Install and configure vSphere Replication 5.1

Posted on Updated on

Another coolest free features included with vSphere 5.1 is vSphere Replication. It’s more easy to install and configure compare with vSphere Replication 5.0.

vSphere Replication 5.1 is Virtual Appliance (OVA)…Very Cool. And the database already included in the appliance. Just download from VMware Download Pages.

Btw, don’t forget to enable traffic for vSphere Replication on a VMKernel NIC.

  • Go to your cluster—> “Hosts and Clusters”.
  • Right click the cluster and click “All vCenter Actions” —> “Deploy OVF Template”

  • Select the ova file then click “Next”
  • Validate the details and click “Next”
  • Click “Accept” the EULA and click “Next”
  • Select the “Name and folder” and click “Next”
  • Select the “Datastore” and click “Next”
  • Select the “Network” and click “Next”
  • Provide an administrative “password” and enter the “Networking properties” and click “Next”
  • Click “Next” on the vService bindings, when the binding status is “ok”
  • Click “Finish”

Now the vSphere Replication appliance is ready to be powered on.

If you have DR vCenter Server then you will need to deploy a vSphere Replication appliance in DR site also.

  • Go to your cluster under “vCenter” —> “Hosts and Clusters”.
  • Right click one of your virtual machines and select “All vSphere Replication Actions” and then click on “Configure Replication”.

  • As a target site select the vCenter Server and click “next”.
  • As a target location select a datastore and click “next”.
  • Select the RPO, I selected 15 minutes and click “next”.

  • Click “finish”.

Next check on the progress of the replication:

  • Click on the “Home” button.
  • Click on “vSphere Replication” .
  • Click on “Sites”.
  • On the “Summary” tab you can see that a virtual machine replication is in progress.
  • Click “View details” you can see some more specifics. It is the first time it is being synced so it will do a full sync as indicated.
  • When it is finished it should show a green check.

How to recover virtual machine?

  • Click on the “Home” button.
  • Click on “vSphere Replication”.
  • Click on “Sites”.
  • Click on the “Monitor” tab and next on “Incoming Replications”.
  • Right click the virtual machine.

Follow the steps and done!!!.

Very Simple right.
